How good are football head jigs for bass?

I,ve noticed many of the pro,s are using football head jigs.I am going to buy some and start using them as well.Do you think they outperform other techniques and if they do when do they work best.Seems like they are especially suited to deep water applications but are there other uses for them?What are some good dependable brands that you have confidence in and what color combinations do you like?Thanks
