Adam B asked:

You can call me a wimp all you want, but this is my first year of football, and I am afraid to get tackled. I will be in 8th grade and I am about 5′2/5′3ish, but only 102 pounds. I am most likely going to be put of offense becase I’m one of the fastest on the team, but I am afraid about getting tackled. For example, when I am tackled what if I put my arm out in front of me and I land hard on it???

Dang your small, if your getting tackled don’t ever put your arm out in front of you because it could cause an injury or a possible fumble if you don’t want to get tackled you can juke them out since you seem to be the fastest on the team kop39

It’s not that bad. I think the first time you get hit, you’ll jump up and have an adrenaline rush like no other. Heck, I’ve even patted some guys on the back if they manage a good, clean hit on me.
Besides that, hit the weightroom, and maybe get a lick on someone during a tackling drill. andyswaw

You should have a tackling practise where you go through tackling and getting tackled in a controled manner. Basically like anything you have to get over the fears by just doing it. Like jumping in a cold lake or taking off a bandaid.

BTW, it hurts way more to be tentative and get tackled than to go full-speed and get tackled. And if being tackled doesn’t become less intimidating, you may need to play defence or even find another sport. WSIDR III

    You are small.
You can overcome by knowing you have pads on.
    (they don’t really help)
Just try and intimidate the defense, you might not get tackled as hard. PAC Unite!

You have nothing to worry about. Keep in mind that you are fast (atleast you say you are). Your speed will bring down the likelyhood that you will be getting tackled. Also, keep in mind when playing at the jr.high level, more than likley, they guys that are trying to tackle you are just as scared to tackle you as you are of getting TACKLED. In fact if you just brace yourself for that tackle you will be fine……Now, DO NOT STICK YOUR ARM OUT…you are not Walter Payton (Ask your Dad who that is) Also, believe it or not once you get tackeled a couple of times, you will get over your fear….and LISTEN to your coaches…they know what they are talking about. Good luck to you young jedi! Dark G

    1. start workin’ out
    2. learn how to juke from an advanced player
    3. try and learn how to play WR you don’t get tackled by those big linemen and linebackers

and if you do get tackled try to put your hands by your sides gangstap39

I’ve always played on the line, so I’m usually either doing the tackling or protecting the ball carrier. But from general experience, getting hit is not as bad as you think.

1st thing to remember is, the harder you hit THEM, the less it’ll hurt YOU. For tacklers, we’re trained to tackle THROUGH the target, not the target itself. It’s like breaking wood or glass with your hand. If you hit the board, and it doesn’t break, you’ll get hurt. If you hit THROUGH the board, and it breaks, no pain. Same principle in football.

2nd thing to remember is to keep your limbs close to your body when you fall. NEVER stop yourself from falling with your arm outstreatched (my first game in 6th grade, a kid did that, landed on his forearm, and the bone broke through the skin). Always land on your torso (sides, preferably) because it is the most well padded, both by equipment and by your core muscles. Be more worried about your knees, since that’s the downfall of 80-90% of football players. Runners are suppose to take short, choppy steps, rather than long gaits. You can cut easier, and also your legs aren’t as exposed.

3rd, for pre-football preparations, I’ve found Judo to be a great resourse. It teaches you how to fall, and trains the “tuck and roll” instinct that’ll help you survive. For me, it helped with controlling momentum and center of gravity, essential to pass blocking. And get some friends to tackle you, start slowly at first, and build up to 75% speed.

Remember, fear is all mental. Being hesitent and freezing at the crucial moment is worse than dishing or taking a hit. So you have nothing to fear but fear itself. orion11380

I am just starting freshman football, and I am in your same position. However, I am comparing it to rollercoasters; I was scared of them at first but once I rode one I felt a rush like no other and wanted to get back on it. We don’t start full gear practice until August but I am sure that after the first few hits and getting accustomed to the contact, you will do fine. Perception is reality, so go into it knowing you will get back up and continue to go beast mode on the other team. davecarroll87

Everyone has fear, the question is are you willing to let fear control you or will you overcome it and play some football. Mark Anthony

Deliver the blow, every single time. I’ve been whapped a couple times, especially running routes across the middle. But if you deliver the blow, then you won’t fell any pain. Even if you do end up on your ***. Irrational People Suck

You cant, my first year and a half I was more scared of hitting someone, but that was because I went against HUGE kids, on piece of advice, get FULL SPEED WHEN YOU HIT THEM that way You will probably get the best of the blow djdwildcat.com
