Generally rugby boots have more ankle protection than football boots, so the boot goes higher up the ankle.

    There are 3 main reasons;

    1) Rugby boots have a wider platform to transfer more power when rucking and mauling as well as running.
    2) The Studs are much more stronger.
    3) Football boots are made for kicking, Rugby boots are made for power transference

Rugby boots – if i’m correct – has 6/10 studs, they’re also bigger than football studs. Football boots has something like 16/18 studs.
In rugby the front-row players use boots that goes up to their ankles, not the same with back-row players. Football boots have smaller studs and some of them even have a different shape of stud.

So the ones you have i think are for rugby! Dudgie

  5. Silence says:

It’s hard to say without a little bit more info but most modern football boots have more than 6 studs so I would guess it’s a rugby boot. In many cases though the boots are very similar and interchangeable between sports! Silence

  7. sam says:

rugby boots have bigger studs and normally have 6-8 studs, and also depends on the make if the are kooga, adidas or Canterbury they most probably rugby boots. sam

  8. |>>Danny edge<<| says:

Usually the makes… Rugby boots main makes are the likes of canterbury, kooga, mizuno, gilbert etc. where as football is more your addidas and nike boots.

PLUS Rugby boots have 6 studs on the sole of the boot at the front where as football boots have 4… they all have 2 at the back usually…

Also you can but rugby boots to give you ankle protection so this is also another big give away…

When buying boots, if you can’t tell just ask the supervisor or helpers in your local sports shop, they will inform you :) |>>Danny edge< <|

Rugby boots have more mud on them ;-)

Seriously though it depends on position a lot of players where football boots for rugby. Specific rugby boots are less fashion sensitive then football boots, and often come with higher ankles.

The only rule is that you must have metal studs to play rugby as the plastic ones can splinter and cause injury. As long as you turn up to a match with boots with metal studs it doesn’t matter if they are rugby or football.

Ofcouse the final clue is rugby boots are more likely to be branded with rugby Centric brands like kooga, gilbert etc.

Its all to do with preference and position and of course when the ground is hard you could where astro type boots with rubber studs. helpfuljim

  14. dman says:

Rugby boots have a max of 8 studs I think. If you find a pair football boots with 8 or less, you can play rugby in them. dman

  15. rugbymadtigger says:

if the make is a common rugby make then they are rugby boots such as kooga or Gilbert also they often have 6-8 studs which are all metal not metal tipped. rugby boots are usually stiffer and more sturdy and quite often cover the ankle the outside sole also often tends to be reinforced with extra plastic to make them stiffer and to stop lots of pressure on the studs pushing them through the soles. rugbymadtigger
