How do I become a football coach without playing first?
I want to be a coach, but I have a heart problem that restricts me from actually playing. I’m in high school now, but I love football, playbooks, etc. I need to know what kind of degree I need in college, and to what level I would actually make it. Don’t worry, if you don’t think I’ll make it, tell me. I won’t kill myself because someone told me I wouldn’t make it that far. Just tell the truth, I can handle it.

First work as an assistant (or towel boy)…might take some ribbing, but do your best and as others have said then go into physical education. You will be able to teach and latch on to a hs team and work your way up. It is a hard road to go when you are not a player, but knowledge of playbooks and the inner workings of a team and its practices will give you an edge.
My personal belief is it is never the best player who makes the best coach, it is the person who lives, breaths, and studies the game. It’s all about heart and desire. Phat Ptony
It is possible. You will need a degree but that shouldn’t stop you from being chosen as a high school football coach. You may have to start as an assistant, maybe at a small college. There is no rule that says you have to have played on a football team to coach one. Daisy
