How in the world does College Football ranking work?
Ohio State is somehow number one and Auburn is second and so forth. Why? What determines their rank? I’ve heard it’s according to how rough the team’s schedule is, but I looked at Ohio’s schedule and it’s a walk in the park compared to others. I see many of other teams with ALOT rougher schedules and are still 3-0 or 4-0 and are ranked WAY lower. I mean of course an average team playing crappy teams is going to get good numbers. Can anyone please explain how College Football Rankings work?

The problem is this early in the season they don’t really work – they are really like alchemy at this early stage of the season. MikeInRI
Well I do know they use computers so its kind of controversial. I know they use the schedule but I’m not sure what else they put in the computer. But they also have people poll ranking. Thats why that one year there was a big argument on who was really the national champions a couple years ago. But of course this is just comig from a chick who knows a lot about football. cheese puff
The rankers are a fickle lot. Ohio State is sexy right now so everybody and their uncle jumps on the same bandwagon. Last year they were saying that USC was the best team ever. They lost. The year before that or maybe one more year back, they said OU was the best ever. They lost. They were hot to trot for Vince Young as Heisman. Then they saw Reggie Bush play one game and the bandwagon changed direction. After Vince Young did his stuff in the Rose Bowl, they said that if they had voted after the National Championship game, Vince Young would have won it hands down. They go the way the wind is blowing and change just that fast when it suddenly goes a different direction. They are fickle, biased, and often just guess or base the rank on hearsay. pshdsa
It depends since there is just more to the rankings. For instance it might be the AP Poll/ranking you see, which means the sports editors from all the AP members cast their vote in a pool and a computer makes the grade. Coaches can vote in theiri own poll. gregory_dittman
“WALK IN THE PARK!!!!!!!!!!!!”…no I’m not an Ohio State fan I hate OSU.But how could you say their schedule is a walk in the park…Most of the big ten teams don’t have an easy schedule at all!!!
