How many players in the nfl did not come through playing college football?
I always hear how players switched from one sport to football, or they were track stars or whatever but now play football. Its not really surprising but how common is this?

very unusual, the head coaches of the fotball team would actually have to do A LOT of research on many guys, and there history in sports. once they (just say) find a runner that was also a wide reciever in high school. they’ll interview him (maybe), then test his skills, then see if he qualifies, and if hes better then the other guy the head coach had in mind that actually played football in college Killer Miller95
I know Antonio Gates did not play college football just basketball…The only other one I can think of in the modern era would be Eric Swann who was drafted by the AZ Cardinals several years back. There may be others but those are the only 2 I can think of. chrgrfndan
zero, Antonio Gates did play college football, he just went to a junior college, to be at that level, the NFL coaches need to know what they are getting, if they cant evaluate them at college, then they cant know how they will do. John W

Not very common. Other than Antonio Gates and a couple of punters from Australia the only other one I know if is Stephen Neal of the New England Patriots.
Neal played HS football, but was a wrestler in college at CSU Bakersfield. He was a four time All-American, two time National Champion and won the Dan Hodge award (most outstanding wrestler in the nation). He was also a Pan-American and World Champion plus was awarded the most outstanding wrestler in the world. Unfortunately, he lost the finals of the US Olympic trials in 2000.
He was signed as a free-agent by the Patriots in 2001. Rob B
Antonio Gates is the only one I know of. nygiantsfan
