How much should I charge for a youth football camp?

We are creating a football camp for boys ages 6-10 in our local neighborhood. I have been researching prices for the boys to pay for the camp and have seen everything from $60 to $250. The camp will be taught by about 5 high school boys who play varsity football. There may be one or two college level football players. As parents, how much would you pay for your child to go to camp for about 6 hours a day including lunch? The neighborhood is pretty affluent, so I can’t tell how much they would be willing to pay. Please help! Thank you.

As a parent I wouldn’t send my kid to a camp run by high school students. Not because they are in high school, but because the camp is not insured, the staff have not been finger-printed and there are no emergency procedures in place. I would also want to pay by credit card.

My suggestion is that you go to the city parks and recreation department and talk to them about being a contract instructor for them. That way you can run your camp and all the legal issues are handled by the recreation department.

They will advertise your camp in their summer brochure and take the registration for you. They will also make sure you get a field permit to run the camp on. Of course they will take a percentage of the fees. How it works is that you tell them you want a certain amount per kid (say $150) and what your minimum number is (say 10 kids). They will add their costs onto that $150. It’s usually a 65/35 split. So you would get $150 per kid and they would add around $75 to that making the camp cost $225.

The recreation department can help you come up with a fee that is reasonable for your area. I will say that a typical 6 hour sports camp in an affluent area that is not ran by retired professional ball players would be around $225.

By the way, I would have the kids bring their own lunch. It’s much easier and you won’t have to worry about food permits, unless you were planning on having a food service cater or buying pizzas.

    Good luck. Curt J
