If I am a running back on a football team is all I have to do is catch the ball and run basically?
I wanna be a running back on a football team and I never played before and I have NO IDEA how to play and don’t know the positions. Can someones list and briefly explain them (defensive and offensive) please? And if I am running back all I do is run and catch right? Can you please also tell me what a safety is? Serious answers only please, thanks.

And if your question is what you believe a running back is, you will never play a snap. 123
You better know how to block if you want to be a running back Zorak
If you want to learn how football works, watch a couple of the preseason games on this month in the NFL, or grab a copy of Madden. Typically, when a coach gives positions out to rookies, they will be low-risk positions where they can learn how a team is supposed to work together. Typically, the best athletes on a team go to positions like runningback, but they are usually experienced players who understand the game. Unless you’re a freak-of-nature athlete with talent coming out of your eyeballs, you’ll probably be playing a position where you can learn without risk to the team.
For example, I started out as an offensive lineman. Four years later, I’m playing linebacker and I played fullback my second year. kappers
It’s a lot more complex than that. There’s routes to be run, plays to memorize, and lots of practices to absorb to understand potential game scenarios. Sure, a few seconds after a play starts it does just basically become run-like-a-chicken-with-its-head-missing, but you have to be in the right place at the right time to get to that. Will the quarterback hand off to the right or left? Is it a swing outside of the tackle or just a slant between the guards? Are you running a screen to be the safe pass if the quarterback gets in trouble? There’s lots of aspects to pick up. I’d recommend doing some searching in the library, get your basic knowledge up a bit, then going by the team and seeing if there’s any practice squad work for you. Practice is how you learn Southpaw
You do alot the RB is the most important position next to the QB he runs with the ball he catches the ball n he blocks for the QB … The offense is the one with the ball trying get points in the board n defense is the other side of the field who try to stop the offense from scoring and getting there team on the field. scoring would also be good. Clare
As a running back there are many factors that go into the position: holding onto the ball… fumble the ball frequently in practice and/or games and you will not see the field for a while. You must be coached to read and accelerate through the gaps in the line. Having good hands is also important, and blocking for the QB on passing situations is crucial to becoming a starter. Tailbacks also require adequate speed and good strength, so if you think you are up to it go for it. Leave it up to the coaches to fill you in on this.
When you say safety, which do you mean? The position ’safety’ on defense is a defensive back that keeps the play in front of them. Defensive line is there to stuff a running play, linebackers are there to fill the gap and keep the play to a minimal 2-3 yard gain, and safeties are there to stop the big play. They also play deepest in the secondary to stop big passing plays. Scoring a ’safety’ is when a defense stops the offense in the opponents own endzone. A safety is 2 points. Here’s a list of other football positions…
Oh, and unless you are Reggie Bush or Barry Sanders, NEVER run backwards as a running back. Potatums
You line up behind the QB and take the handoff/pitch and go through and assigned whole in the Offensive line. Don’t worry ask the coach and he will tell you the wholes to run through and routes when you go out for a pass. Texans Fan
You might want to watch some football games or buy Madden games. It’ll explain it good to you.

You have to be really athletic to be a running back. Usually a first year player doesn’t start at such an important position unless you have monster skills. Especially seeing how you are not to familiar with the sport. Take your first year as a learning experience. Don’t be down when if you find out you won’t start. ~Buccos~
