Jim C asked:

I’m about 130 pounds, 5′6, and have been a fan of football all my life. I did not play football my freshman year but i did play some football in 8 grade. I’m thinking of trying out for wide reciever. I have decent hands and run about a 5.2 40. Should I try out?

Have you seen the movie Rudy? If you have not ,watch it, and if you have, I say try out for the team and play your hardest. My older brother played and he loves the sport so play the sport you love even if your are not a freshman.

    Absolutely!

You cannot teach height or speed so you are pretty much limited to what God gave you there, but you can still improve other areas of your game.

Hands- simply a matter of practice and concentration and something you can improve

Blocking- size helps, but some of the best blockers I ahve seen were 180 lb linemen who had technique and lots of heart. Your coach will really notice if you are blocking well.

Strength- Get in the weight room and work on your strength for blocking, injury prevention and for better making contact with tacklers. This is something you can control.

Football is a unique sport. You rarely get a chance to play it in pads and helmets after high school so if you like the game, then seize the chance or you will always regret it later in life.

I think if it is something you love you should do it. If you don’t you will regret it .Go out and do your best, maybe catch a few passes and run some routes with a friend. that should boost your confidence.I played in high school at 5′6″ and 140 lbs and if I can do it so could you.Don’t let anybody talk you out of it.
