    Florida
    Alabama
    Texas
    Iowa
    USC

Does Texas have a decent team? Is a frogs butt airtight? .

By BCS standings here are the TOP 5 teams:

    1.) Florida
    2.) Alabama
    3.) Texas
    4.) Iowa
    5.) USC

Texas has a really good team. Watch football games and play Madden video games and you’ll understand it. ~Buccos~

The BCS rankings have been updated since the previous two answers were given. The top five teams as of November 1st are:

    1) Florida
    2) Texas
    3) Alabama
    4) Iowa
    5) Cincinnati

Bear in mind that the top five can be very fluid from week to week. Many other schools have had success over the last few years. Other teams that have won the National Championship over the past ten years include LSU, USC, Ohio State, Miami, Oklahoma and Florida State. Other teams like Notre Dame have had rough years lately but still have a very devout national fanbase.

Yes, Texas has a very good football program, as evidenced by their present ranking. They won the National Championship in 2006 (at the end of the 2005 season).

The rules are difficult to “sum up” quickly but are fairly easy to understand once you’ve watched a few games. The object of the game is to score points by either maneuvering the ball across the opponent’s goal line (6 points) or by kicking the ball off the ground and through the opponent’s goal posts (3 points).

You move the ball forward (or “gain yards”) via a series of plays, or “downs.” Each play begins when one player “snaps” (or “hikes”) the ball backward, between his legs, to the quarterback, who can then run with the ball, hand the ball off to another player, or attempt to pass the ball forward. Each play ends when the ball carrier is tackled or runs out of bounds, or when a forward pass is incomplete (hits the ground without being caught). On an incomplete forward pass the ball returns to the spot where the previous play began.

A team is given four “downs” during which they must gain a total of ten yards or more. Once they gain the required ten yards, they are given four more downs… or in other words, they go back to “first down.” A team retains possession until they run out of downs, or they score, or the other team gets possession of the football by recovering a fumbled ball or by intercepting a pass… or, a team that only has one down remaining (i.e., “fourth down”) can forfeit possession by punting the ball, which gives the ball over to the other team but (hopefully) moves the ball much farther downfield, so the other team has much farther to go when they try to score.

When a team scores a touchdown, they are given the opportunity to score a “try” (or “conversion”). The ball is spotted at the 3-yard line (or 2-yard line in the NFL) and the team can placekick the ball for one extra point, or attempt to run or pass the ball across the goal line for two extra points.

Another way to score is to force the other team backward and tackle the ball carrier back across their own goal line. That’s a “safety” and scores two points for the defense, who then get to receive the ball via free kick.

That’s the basics, but of course there are many rules regarding what sort of actions are allowed or disallowed. You can read more on these Wikipedia pages:

    Hope that helps! GeoffTrowbridge
