What do national football teams do between world cups?

I’m kind of new to watching football, so i’m not too sure. Whenever I hear about football outside of world cups its mainly just club level game play. Are there any other national level tournaments? I know there’s the confederations cup and qualifiers too, but thats only within the year before the world cup isn’t it?
