What is the meaning behind the tradition of football (soccer) teams lining up out of the tunnel with children?

I watch as much premier league and champions league football as I can, and at the beginning of most games when the players come out of the tunnel before kick-off they each have a kid lined up with them. What is that?

    just for kicks really. they do it for a lot of matches to ge the kids onto the field with some great players just a friendly gesture really. idk why it started but they do it a lot andrewc1117
