I’ve been thinking about playing HS football in 2008. I have played tennis and squash for a long time. I am 5 foot 10 inches tall and 170 pounds. My 40 time is inbetween 4.5 and 4.8 seconds. I am good at catching the ball. My tackling has been improving. If I continue at this rate I can be a pretty good tackler. I’ve never played on an actual football team. I have played tackle football with my friends and they think I should play on a high school team. What position should I play?

At this point you could try out for corner-back or safety or wide receiver. There is also the question of development. If you are a senior you need to pick a slot that you can learn quickly, but if you are a sophomore, then you have time to learn a position. Football has a lot of plays to remember and techniques to master for all the positions. That is why most kids have to wait until they are older to play on the varsity team. Give it a shot keep a good attitude and have fun learning. Hebrew Scared

I think you would make a good cornerback or free safety. Can you jump? Matt

You sound like a linebacker to me, with your size and speed. You could play receiver, but I’d recommend tight end instead, which will improve both your blocking and catching skills.

I think you could play fullback too if you were a little stockier actually. Most fullbacks are short and stocky, and very powerful. you should gain a good 10-15 pounds of mostly muscle to play that position. Jordanzinator

normally you don’t choose your position when trying out for h.s football. the coaches will evaluate your skills and see where you are best suited for this team. for your body type i would think you would be used as a rb, wr, or maybe qb depending on your skills. on defense you could possibly play cb, s, or lb. keep practicing catching the ball and do different drills to improve your footwork. watch games and read books unless you think you already know enough about the game. there is alot of things you will have to learn if you make the team. good luck and it will create alot of fond memories if you chose to try out. travis m
