San Antonio Spurs asked:

I am going to join the football team for my school. I will be in the 8th grade. I am about 5′ 4″ and i weigh about 164. (a bit overweight) I can throw the ball well and i can catch decently. I can sprint pretty fast when it is time to do so. I really do not know much about positions in football. Thanks for helping!

Decide where you would like to play and tell the coach. Don’t think you are suitable for something, let them decide. But if you have your heart set on a specific position then say you want to play that position, then work hard to earn it. The Saint

With your age and size you would probably be a lineman, BUT, if you are fast you could be a full back or a line backer on defense!

Just have fun and listen to the coach, he will tell you where he needs you! me4tennessee

At that size I’d go for linebacker or tight end. TheOnlyBeldin

I would work on my catching..and try out for tight end.
At your age, most coaches will probably put you on one of the lines..either offensive or defensive. If you play offensive line..try out for tackle or center.

On defense, I would shoot for defensive end, because youll be involved in a lot of the action.

best of luck. Remember…Quitters never win..and Winners Never Quit. dave z

Try out every position and play whichever one you seem to fit in Boa

Maybe tight end, running back, center, or guard.

On defense, defensive end, or linebacker.

That’s all based on your size. I don’t know much beyond that. You basically said you can run, throw, and catch, so you’ll have to figure out which one of those you do best. Your coach will probably sort you out. It’s a team sport, so it depends on what the rest of the team can do. Whatever you do better than the other players, that’s what you’ll do. kikikicombobreaker

The best match is tight end. There, your size is ideal for blocking, and if you can catch, you could be a good reciever. wallis_drake

You might be a little short for QB or TE.
That’s not to say you can’t. Look up Jared Lorenzen sometime.
But don’t feel bad about it, either. It seems like everyone harbors daydreams about being the one to score the TD … rather than take pride in being the one to spring a block for someone who scores, or to be the one who stuffs a run on a goalline stand.

If you really have some speed, you might want to think fullback (which usually blocks for the running back/halfback), or defensive end (which is more reliant on speed than the defensive tackles they play next to), or possibly linebacker (depending on how fast you are, they flow to the football and cover the tight end when he goes out for a pass).

Just be honest with your coach, and do what he tells you to do. RK
