When will the MLS start playing in real soccer/football fields?
My favorite sport in the world is soccer/football, i love watching, playing, breathing the sport. I have a true passion for the game, and to me its insulting to see played on a stupid american football field. So does anyone know when all teams in MLS will have a real soccer stadium?

Well it’s getting there. If you go to Wikipedia and find out what stadium each team plays on, then you will see that there will be more teams playing in soccer-specific stadiums than US football fields. smashguy912
well the official estimated date is 2019 La Galaxy 10 – Oak Raiders 0 ha!
I wouldnt be so keen to see them move away from those fields.
Yes they may be ‘borrowing’ the fields BUT it provides the teams with professional venues and a fraction of the cost of building a purpose built one.
Economics forces clubs to share, and I do not thing thats a bad thing, why spends hundreds of millions of a venue that is used 20 times a year, or even 50 times a year if two or more sports can shre if effectivly and it be used 100 times a year.
The teams get (hopefully) the best possible surface, the fans get a great stadium, tv becomes more involved becasue the infrastructure is in place already and we dont see the money drained from clubs in interest on loans for stadiums.
What I do hope is as we see soccer become more popular the teams getting better deals for use of the stadiums, better access to them and less of the other sports marks being left on the fields when our games are being played. demon_aus
well they need to not be cheap and built a fucking stadium Juan G
You do understand that the dimensions of the two fields are the same? I’m almost a hundred percent sure they are, but even if not they are insanely close. Correct me if I am wrong but a soccer field is 110-120 yards by 30-40 yards wide.
By the way the Revolution is getting a stadium built for them by the regional owner. oransiei
First let me state that I am American born and so are my parents and grandparents. This country is becoming so ethnically diverse, the sport is gaining traction, and the MLS league understands that we must grow the sport organically to make it a legitimized venue. This is why the EPL looks (and is) so successful on TV. The stadiums are not these gigantic Soldier Field / Ohio State stadiums, therefore they look and feel packed. This creates excitement and passion that the sport naturally generates. Sports highlights are very weak in this country when it comes to football (when they show it on a hand ball field with all the yard lines marked on the pitch). Football specific stadiums that the MLS is now pursuing will soon be the norm. I agree that it is annoying to see real football played on a hand ball (NFL) pitch. We are not a Mexico where football rules as it is the only huge sport and a great source of national pride. (That is why I love beating them at their own game). Come to Toyota Park anytime and join us in Section 118, cheering on the Fire, and see football at world class level. Go Blanco & McBride! The NFL is great league and will always be a part of the American experience. It just needs to return the name of our sport back to its rightful owner. By the way, do we realize how many world class athletes we loose to the NFL? All the resources, all the money, and only 70 million consistent fans, compared to billions in real football. What about the Olympics? If we put half of our NFL’s best in various events in the Summer Olympics in China, what would the medal count be then? Would China still be claiming they won? How about the other half of the NFL focuses on real football. They could make millions more yearly on a global scale, and be a household name in Istanbul and L.A. We would be exporting world class strikers all over the world to different leagues for colossal salaries like Brazil does now. Do we really need to focus so much of our athletic talent on a sport that no one really gets into everywhere else on this planet, except the 48 states of the mainland? Chicago Fire Football Fan
I think all MLS clubs have a soccer-specific stadium or planning to build one, though they are in various planning stages. I think the only club that has zero plans is the new Seattle Sounders club which believe closing the upper sections of Qwest Field (home of the NFL Seahawks) will be enough. We’ll see…
Anyway, it is the number one priority of MLS to build soccer specific stadiums. The league has not been shy about this objective. It believes smaller, more intimate stadiums will enhance the value of each club by drawing more interest (and higher ticket prices) and controlling stadium operations (instead of paying a lease and being second-class citizens to NFL teams).
Unfortunately, the recession has hampered stadium plans. Here in the Bay Area, the Earthquakes will have a much tougher time funding the stadium so it’s going to take longer than expected. Fortunately, Buck Shaw Stadium is a good soccer-specific facility (compared to Spartan Stadium where the Quakes used to play and share with San Jose State’s football team) though it only holds 10,000 people. But how long can owner Lew Wolff wait for a new stadium while the club loses money??? Frederick S
