Why do high schools start football before school starts, and play basketball during Christmas break?

Jordan asked:

School starts on Sept, 8th, and they’ve already been playing football for 2 weeks now. They also schedule basketball games during Christmas break. That just shows that schools are more concerned with athletics than academics, thus causes students to forget why they’re at school in the first place — to get an education! I’m only 15 so I don’t know.. did it always used to be this way?

There is nothing wrong with schools doing athletics at non school times. It allows time to practice and play without interfering with instruction./ DrIG

Unfortunately schools are preparing you for what college and beyond is like and athletics is a huge moneymaker, so you have to be good to get paid well in the field of athletics (the schools and not just the athletes). I agree with you that athletics is misplaced in importance of gaining a good education, on the other hand, if you are training for sports and even playing games outside of normal school time, then you perhaps can focus on school work when school is in session.
