Why do so many college football players come from Hargrave Military Academy?
Is it related to the post-grad program? Do they fix kids grades or make them smarter so they can be NCAA eligible? Is the football team a big deal so they bring in the older kids or something? Do they have to pay or are they on scholarship?

Hargrave Military Academy’s a prep school. They recruit football players, mostly from VA and MD high schools, many with good attitudes but deficient educations due to the quality of their school or inadequate study habits. The kids make the commitment to comply with the strict military discipline that includes academics. Most learn the good academic habits necessary for college. The school is a recruiting hot bed for the Big Ten, Big East, ACC, and SEC. Penn St. seems to get quite a few so you can be sure it’s not grade fixing operation.

HMA is one of many prep schools across the USA that have post grad athletics programs, mainly football and basketball. Many non academic qualifiers out of HS go to these schools and play for a year to get their core GPA up to standard or their ACT/SAT score up to be NCAA eligible. What makes these schools so attractive to athletes is that they can play a year without losing any college athletic eligibility. Almost like a 5th year of HS. It allows for a extra year of growth and maturity, some players may have the grades coming out of HS but were under recruited or may not have got the opportunity to play as much as they would have liked in HS. Some prep schools could cost as much as 50K a year to attend, so to be good enough to get a scholarship is the criteria for the prep school coach. It is a very competitive situation to attend and scholarships are limited. Many big time University’s send their non qualifiers to these schools for a year so they will become eligible and stay sharp athletically. For those of you who haven’t heard of HMA go to there web site and see for yourself what Colleges and Universities their players are being placed to on athletics scholarships year in and year out.
